THE DUKE OF RICHMOND

BEST NEW BISTRO

THE DUKE OF RICHMOND

SHORTLISTED BY BISTRONAUT #12

WHO
Chef Tom Oldroyd, the man behind Angel’s beloved Oldroyd and the former chef director of Polpo, has taken over this 1841 corner boozer in Dalston with actress-fiancée Meryl Fernandes (EastEnders) and has turned it into a sexy gastropub, where vintage French staples meets seasonal British produce. Check out their busy schedule for Burger Mondays, complimentary Bloody Marys, raclette nights with the Wine & Rind cheese shop or their unconventional Mum and Dad lunch club. This summer, it’s all about soaking up the sun on the terrace.

FOOD
A gorgeously fluffy Cornish crab and broad bean vol-au-vent (yes! For real!) with a brown crab beurre blanc sauce and pea shoots – £8.50
A famously rich lobster chip butty – £13.50
Melt-in-your-mouth lamb sweetbreads with a soft mash, morels, peas, little gem lettuce and the richest jus – £17
A chubby house burger, oozing with Roquefort, béarnaise and confit shallots, escorted by skin-on chips – £16.50 (£10 with a beer on Mondays)
Roasts galore on Sundays, including a version for the little ones (£7) – £15.50-22
Violetta artichoke, wild garlic and braised endive cassoulet, green beans in vinaigrette
Middle White pork loin, hispi cabbage, beef-dripping roast potatoes & apple sauce
A nostalgic, creamy café liégeois with vanilla ice cream, chocolate and coffee sauce, plus chantilly. Dig your spoon into the bottom of the glass and work your way up – £6.50

DRINKS
A draught pint of pale ale from the local 40FT Brewery – £5.70
An old-school French 75 to kick things off (gin, lemon, sugar and Crémant de Loire) – £9
A tropical glass of Outnumbered Sauvignon blanc from the Wairarapa Valley in New Zealand – £8
A carafe of summery Provence rosé from Mas de la Source – £16

DECOR
Pubby but fancy, with beautifully time-worn hardwood floors and almond green walls, brightened up by colourful, graphic artwork. Order your drinks at the bar on the right-hand side, or sit slightly more formally in the sun-drenched dining room on the left.

NOISE
It’s a pub! And a very kid-friendly one at that, so expect extra laughter and crying on the weekends, with street hustle from Queensbridge Road.

SEATING
A small mix of normal and high tables are available in the bar area. Grab a black wooden stool or a posher black and olive green Chiavari chair in the dining room. If you want to sit outside, get there early to secure one of the four wooden picnic tables. There are plenty of high chairs for babies as well.

VIBE
It’s a very East London family spot, with kids running around.

RESTROOMS
They’re painted black, with graphic cement tiles and a splash of muted dusty pink.

SERVICE
12.50% discretionary service charge added to your bill, as usual in London. Feel free to add some more!

WOULD RECOMMEND
Yes! Make it your new locale.
